50% of Asians lack a fold in their upper eyelids. This may give them the appearance of being tired, unfriendly or angry when, in fact, they do not feel this way. The “double-eyelid” procedure creates a natural appearing fold in the upper eyelid when it is lacking.
Because the anatomy of the Asian eyelid which lacks the fold is different from those that do, an extra step must be completed during the surgery to create the fold. The procedure may be completed under local anesthesia or light sedation.
Prior To Surgery
Prior to eyelid surgery, the doctor will consult with you to discuss facts about the surgery as well as recommended preoperative and postoperative care. In addition, we will utilize photographs and digital imagery to project your post surgery appearance. This will give you an idea of what your eyes will look like once the procedure has been completed.
The doctor will explain all of your options in detail including your options for anestha. We also offer instructions to ensure your surgery goes smoothly such as refraining from Aspirin in order to prevent excessive bleeding. You will be provided with a prescription for antibiotics in order to reduce the potential for infection.
Recovering from eyelid surgery typically takes between one to two weeks. The eyes may temporarily demonstrate sensitivity to light and other stimuli. For the best results, eyeglasses can be worn during the healing process.
